What is the Homeopathic Remedy for Sore Throats?

More than one homeopathic remedy for sore throats exists. Most of these remedies attempt to keep the throat moist and soothe the pain of inflammation. Common remedies include gargling with or drinking various liquids, using a steam tent, and even chewing on garlic. No homeopathic remedy for sore throats should be relied upon as the sole source of medical treatment. It is always best to consult a licensed physician for health care advice.

One of the simplest homeopathic remedy for sore throats is to gargle with salt water, which helps to kill bacteria in the throat. Mix one half teaspoon of common table salt in four ounces of warm water. Take a sip of the water and gargle it in the back of the throat for 30 seconds or so. Keep sipping and gargling until the glass is empty. Repeat every three or four hours.

Various warm drinks can also act as a homeopathic remedy for a sore throat. Tea is the most common of these, but other drinks can be made at home. Drinking warm lemon or lime juice is said to help soothe a sore throat. If the sick person has trouble with the taste of undiluted citrus juice, honey can be mixed in to sweeten the drink.

Drinking cider vinegar is another homeopathic remedy for sore throats. Mix one tablespoon of honey with one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in an eight-ounce glass of hot water. This drink, and any other drink containing honey, should not be given to infants or toddlers. Honey contains a bacterium that can cause illness in children younger than two years old.

For extremely dry sore throats or sore throats with nasal congestion, a steam tent may be an effective homeopathic remedy. To create the steam tent, fill a bowl or sink with very hot water. Have the sick person lean over the water. Cover his or her head with a towel to trap the steam. Have the sufferer stay in this position until the heat becomes uncomfortable or the water cools.

The Amish have been using garlic cloves as a homeopathic remedy for sore throats for hundreds of years. Garlic contains allicin, a chemical that is harmful to bacteria, including the bacterium that causes strep throat. Simply peal a garlic clove and then suck on it like candy. Biting the clove every now and then will help release the chemical. The obvious drawback to this remedy is that the person's breath will smell strongly of garlic during and after treatment.
