What are the Different Types of Wardrobe Doors?

Wardrobe doors can be classified based on either the materials used or how they are installed. Commonly, the materials used on the door are the same as the materials used on the body of the wardrobe. For instance, if oak is used on the body, then the wardrobe door is also made of oak. Some wardrobe doors, however, are built with a different material that can create a stylistic and functional look.

Wooden wardrobe doors have always been a popular choice, especially for homeowners who want intricate patterns and carvings as a design. They are also very sturdy and durable. Some wood, such as cedar, can even repel insects naturally and lend their unique aromas to the fabrics contained inside. For light-colored woods, white oak, maple, and hickory are some of the favorites, while mahogany, walnut, and rosewood can be chosen for dark-colored wooden doors.

Another common material for wardrobe doors is glass. This offers the wardrobe a modern design and contributes to the contemporary feel of the room in general. Glass can also be very practical, as the clothes inside can be instantly seen even without opening the door. Glass doors may not be engraved with patterns, but they can be tinted, stained with colors, and even frosted to fit the theme of the room. For a more modern style, metal frames can be installed to outline the glass doors.

Wardrobe doors can also be made from mirrors. As a material, mirror can be very convenient, since one can see how her outfit looks just by closing the wardrobe door. Mirror glasses can also create the illusion of a bigger space, a feature that benefits small bedroom spaces.

In relation to their installation methods, wardrobe doors can be either hinged or sliding. Hinged doors are very common and easy to install. These doors can open with just a single pull. Some hinged doors are also designed to have extra space, so when a person pulls them open, there are small containers or hooks for bags, neckties, and other accessories.

Sliding wardrobe doors are practical choices for small rooms. They can also be installed on larger wardrobes so as not to add more bulk and inconvenience. Sliding doors made with mirrors are especially ideal, since a person can look at her clothes inside the wardrobe, while looking at her reflection at the same time. Both installation methods—hinged and sliding—can also be combined to make folding wardrobe doors, which are also used for large wardrobes with multiple sections.

@heavanet- I know what you mean, and I think that the look you get is all in the type of mirrored wardrobe doors you choose.

Mirrored doors that are cheap and made of flimsy chrome-looking metal are not very attractive. However, I have seen the type of wardrobe doors that are framed in antique finishing or gold trim. These doors look fantastic, and make any bedroom look high-end and contemporary. Though they may be a bit more costly than the more basic mirrored styles, I think that the look they provide make the extra cost worth it.

Are wardrobe doors with mirrors practical in most homes? I have seen them in some homes that make the room look cheap, but in others they look nice.
