Ice removal can often be accomplished by using a number of different chemicals designed to break it up so it can be easily brushed away. Other compounds may be put on a surface in order to prevent it from accumulating ice in the first place. It can also be eliminated by warming the area with electric, gas, or wood-fueled heat. In addition, articles designed to attract sunlight, such as solar swimming pool covers, could be used to melt this substance away.

A number of de-icers exist to help with ice removal. These products may be designed specifically for use on sidewalks or steps. There are others that are ideal for automobile windshields. These products are normally applied after a significant amount of ice has accumulated on a surface, then allowed to penetrate for anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes. They then work to loosen the frozen matter by breaking the bond it has with the surface it is attached to.

In other instances, preventing the ice from forming from the outset can be very effective. There are a number of products designed to be sprinkled on areas before any snow or rain begins to fall. These materials generally prevent the precipitation from bonding to surfaces, such as concrete. It can normally be swept or washed away after it is wet and should therefore be reapplied as needed.

Heating an area to a temperature that is greater than 32°F (0°C) can also be an effective ice removal technique. This can be done with electric or gas heaters, or by building a wood fire. The type of heat used to melt ice can largely depend on the area where it is located and the different types of fuel available.

Some people may find that using articles like a solar pool cover or tanning blanket are useful when trying to melt ice. This can normally be accomplished by laying the material down over top of the frozen water and waiting for it to become warm. This can be an effective method for small sections of sidewalk, where placing a heater could become dangerous.

Many people who live in cold climates are faced with the chore of ice removal at some point. This does not have to be a cumbersome task as there are many alternatives to doing so. Keeping areas free from this slippery substance can prevent falls and injuries, whether in a business or residential setting.
