Who Lives Longer: Drinkers or Nondrinkers?

Heavy drinkers routinely outlive tee-totalers, according to a 2010 study. Additionally, non-drinkers have higher rates of stress-related illnesses, depression, and anxiety disorders. Moderate drinkers, however, tend to live longer than both heavy drinkers and non-drinkers.

  • Though heavy drinkers have a higher risk of getting cirrhosis and esophageal cancer, they statistically have more friends than non-drinkers.

  • Moderate consumption of alcohol has been shown to reduce the chances of Alzheimer's disease, diabetes, and heart attacks.

  • Statistically, moderate drinkers are wealthier than both heavy drinkers and non-drinkers, but moderate drinkers are more likely to smoke that the other two groups.
