Wilmington, known as "The Credit Card Capital of the World" or "A Place to Be Somebody," has a population of about 70,000 inhabitants spread over a territory of 17.0 mi² (44 km²). Delaware's largest city sits on the edge of two rivers and has a vibrant water life on the Wilmington Riverfront. Wilmington is also one of the few American cities where the African American population is almost two times larger than the white population. European immigrants are also a strong force in the city, especially immigrants from Italy, Greece, and Poland.

The Nemours Mansion and Gardens is one of the most famous sights in Wilmington. The 300-acre park spreads around the mansion and features maze gardens, life-size statues of several Roman gods, and a giant reflecting pool. The house has been converted into a museum and is open to visitors wishing to get a glance of Wilmington's past. Important religious paintings, a musical clock, and a pipe organ are all must-sees inside the house.

For a nice, quiet stroll, visitors can head to the Riverfront Market and the Shipyard Shops, in downtown Wilmington. The long line of waterfront businesses are ideal for shoppers looking for a bargain or simply shopping for the unusual gift to take back home. The Shipyard Shops are especially popular, as they allow for tax-free outlet shopping year-round. After a long day of shopping, relax with a water cruise on the Christina River.

Wilmington is rich in culture and foreign history, due in part to its past as a popular immigrant destination. This is especially evident at the Delaware Art Museum, where exhibits often feature the rich cultural heritage of the city; and in the Delaware Museum of Natural History, where visitors can experience the natural history of the region. If you wish to take a more active role in the arts, the Christina Cultural Arts Center may be the perfect stop. The hands-on center offers classes, workshops, and shows in a variety of performing arts.

Sport enthusiasts can visit the Delaware Sports Museum and Hall of Fame, where memorabilia from Delaware-born stars can be seen. This includes athletes, Olympic gold medal winners, and even sportswriters. The museum offers Internet access to a specialized website, and ongoing shows of sport clips and news. Guided visits are especially good, as the guides are knowledgeable in the history of Wilmington and can answer a myriad of visitors' questions.
