What is the Most Narrow Country?

The most narrow country in the world is the Republic of Gambia, which has an average width of about 22 miles (35 km). The Gambia is also the smallest country in Africa, with an area slightly less than the size of the U.S. state of Delaware.

  • Other countries that are among the most narrow include Cyprus, with an average width of about 25 miles (41 km); Jamaica, with an average width of about 29 miles (47 km); and Israel, with an average width of about 30 miles (49 km).

  • Though Chile is often cited as the most narrow country, in terms of average width, it's nowhere close. In fact, Chile has an average width of about 100 miles (161 km), almost five times the average width of The Gambia.

Australia is the most narrow.

You could state that Monaco and San Marino are narrower. Narrowness needs to be in proportion of width to length. Then Chile would come out top.
