What Is Pantoprazole Magnesium?

Pantoprazole magnesium falls into one of several types of medications used to treat the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and other conditions. These conditions have the tendency to cause over-production of acid in the stomach, which can in turn lead excess stomach acid to overflow into the esophagus. Symptoms of include a burning sensation in the chest and throat, nausea, especially after eating, a feeling that something is lodged in the throat, and difficult swallowing. This medication is available by prescription only, and may not be available in all countries.

An enzyme in the lining of the stomach regulates the production of stomach acid. In certain diseases, such as GERD, that enzyme overproduces the acids, which can cause it to wash back into the esophagus and throat, causing heartburn and reflux. This medication is a proton pump inhibitor, which means it blocks the action of that enzyme, reducing the amount of stomach acid present. There are numerous different types of proton pump inhibitors available as both prescription and over-the-counter medicines, with the main difference being the length of time that they are effective between doses.

Other conditions treated by pantoprazole magnesium include several different types of ulcers, such as stomach ulcers or those found in the intestines. Ulcers can be caused by several different factors, including excessive use of pain relievers or certain other medications, and the use of alcohol or tobacco. One of the most common causes of ulcers in the duodenum, a part of the small intestine, is a bacteria called h. pylori. If a bacterial cause is suspected, antibiotics will typically be given along with the pantoprazole magnesium.

Like all medications, the medication may cause unpleasant side effects in certain people. These side effects are generally mild and include abdominal discomfort, vertigo, fatigue, headache, and bloating or gas. In rare cases, this medication can cause serious complications such as liver damage or pancreatitis. Patients experiencing symptoms such as yellowing of the eyes or skin, severe abdominal pain, or a swollen abdomen should seek medical attention immediately, especially if the symptoms are accompanied by a fever.

Certain preexisting medical conditions may increase the risk of dangerous side effects in patients using pantoprazole magnesium. Individuals with kidney disease may need to take a lower dose or avoid the medication altogether. The medicine’s effects on pregnant women and breastfed babies have not been fully evaluated, and the medication is not recommended for children. Pantoprazole magnesium may increase the risk of developing a stomach infection. Patients can reduce the risk of complications by following their doctors' instructions and using the medication only as directed.

I was diagnosed with GERD about a year and a half ago, and I recently started using pantoprazole magnesium. This article says this medication is used to treat symptoms; however, does anyone know if it’s a good preventative? I love spicy foods, and the idea of giving them up altogether makes me sad. If I plan to have a spicy meal one night, would taking this beforehand help or will it just ease symptoms once they’ve occurred? I’ve been staying away from spicy foods because it makes me nervous, but I’m dying for buffalo wings!
