Nursing informatics education has evolved slowly. Many nursing schools offered information technology classes as electives in the late 1970s, but a focus on computer skills for nursing work did not appear in coursework until the 1980s. In the late 1990s, a group of nursing informatics specialists and academicians developed the set of guidelines that define nursing informatics requirements.
