What is Granulex®?

Granulex® is a topical medication typically used to treat various skin wounds. There are three primary ingredients in Granulex® that interact to promote the healing process: trypsin, castor oil, and balsam peru. Each ingredient works differently to treat the wounds, and people should not use this product if they are allergic to any of the three primary ingredients. The most common form of Granulex® used for human care is an aerosol spray, but there are liquid drops and creams available for veterinary use.

The spray works to reduce pain and expedite the healing process by combining the three primary ingredients. Trypsin assists damaged skin cell removal, balsam peru improves the blood flow to the infected area, and castor oil fights the breakdown of skin cells. The skin problems that Granulex® is typically prescribed for are sunburn, ruptured wounds, decubitus and varicose ulcers, and debride eschar. Decubitas ulcers are usually referred to as bed sores because they form after prolonged pressure to a specific area, varicose ulcers are sores formed by varicose veins, dehiscent wounds usually occur when a wound has reopened after a surgical procedure, and debride eschar is the wound created after the removal of black necrotic tissue.

This medication should be used as prescribed, and only on the areas specified. The suggested use is usually two to three times daily, and the wound can be left either uncovered to air or bandaged with a wet dressing. Patients should not spray Granulex® near face or mouth, and should not use this product on fresh blood clots. The signs of allergic reaction to this medication include swelling of the tongue and throat, fever, dizziness, itching, and rash. Temporary pain associated with the spray has been reported, but extended discomfort or any abnormal symptoms should be immediately reported to a medical professional.

Warning signs of an allergic reaction may include a swollen tongue.

The patient should disclose all medical information to his or her physician before using Granulex® to avoid negative interaction with other medications or pre-existing health conditions. All aerosol products should be stored at room temperature. It should not be exposed to open flame or extreme heat because it is highly flammable. Granulex® can be harmful if ingested or inhaled, and patients should receive emergency medical attention if this occurs. The overuse of this product can cause minor complications and should not be used other than prescribed. Keep this and other medical products out of the reach of children and pets.

I used to use Granulex and unfortunately you can't get it anywhere anymore. I have a brother who is a veterinarian and the same thing-I bought the one for use on animals I was so desperate -they're identical! I searched and found out that you can't get it anymore because of money. Whoever spends the most, gets their product made. I looked everywhere online too. You could get it without a script online when you could get it-but it's history now.

I need granulex liquid desperately for my vet to use in making a wound mix for my horse. His wound is deep and his recovery depends on this liquid form. Does anyone know where I can find this?

@nony - I don’t know if you need a prescription for Granulex topical spray, but if a doctor prescribes it I would take it only as prescribed.

As for stuff online, I think you can buy just about anything online, so I wouldn’t take that as a sure sign that it’s legitimate without a prescription.

I do like the fact that the product has castor oil. Castor oil has been used for years for skin treatment, so it would be ideal for skin wounds I would think.

You don’t necessarily need a prescription for this product, do you? I ask because the article uses the term “prescribed” in connection with it.

I know that you can buy Granulex spray online if you have skin wounds. Honestly I could have used this stuff years ago. I was out on a beach in Florida and didn’t put any skin protection on.

Within an hour my head was totally red and by the next day my skin was peeling. It looked like I had been diseased. I didn’t know there was stuff you could put on your skin to accelerate the healing, but it looks like this would have done the trick.
