People who suffer from joint pain turn to many different healing ointments for relief. Transdermal glucosamine cream is a pain numbing liniment that can ease aches and pains associated with joints. This cream can alleviate other problem joint symptoms as well.

Glucosamine creams are said to work by reducing inflammation and soothing pain. Derived from shellfish, fungus, and animal bone marrow, glucosamine is an amino sugar that is used in the production of fats and proteins. Sometimes glucosamine may be used in conjunction with other ingredients, such as chondroitin, menthol, or camphor. Glucosamine itself is considered to be one of the most common non-mineral, non-vitamin dietary supplements on the market.

Some specific pains that glucosamine creams can help soothe include sore knees, headaches, carpal tunnel, and fibromyalgia. The OsteoArthritis Research Society International recommends the supplement for treatment of osteoporosis. Some studies have shown that glucosamine cream may be able to help rebuild joints. In such cases, the product was used over a lengthy period of time. Short-term use will typically not provide these results.

Other studies have shown that glucosamine cream and other similar supplements may not be helpful in alleviating pain or repairing joints at all. Of the studies that have indicated positive results from the supplement, most indicate that an ingested version of the supplement is most effective. Many proponents of the amino sugar argue that liquid supplements are more beneficial than glucosamine cream.

Pain numbing ingredients such as methyl salicylate, camphor, or menthol are often added to glucosamine cream. These ingredients are considered the active parts of the remedy. They work by deadening pain through hot or cold sensations. Other topical remedies may include eucalyptus oil, emu oil, lanolin, or other ingredients.

While made from natural sources like shellfish, glucosamine cream and other similar products should never be taken internally. Glucosamine creams can be toxic if ingested. Supplements intended for internal use are usually marked as such. A physician should be consulted prior to ingesting these, or any other supplements. People with shellfish allergies can likely still use glucosamine products with the approval of a doctor.

Arthritis is the most common cause of chronic joint pain. This joint inflammation may be brought on through old age, injuries, general wear and tear of the body, or a long-term illness. Other causes of joint discomfort can include dozens of ailments, such as gout, tendinitis, cancer, or a fall.

@ddljohn-- I have been using glucosamine cream for a few weeks now and I have not experienced a change in my blood sugar. I have type 2 diabetes. I think that since the glucosamine is absorbed through the skin, it doesn't have much of an effect on blood sugar levels. But you should still keep an eye on your blood sugar when you first start using this cream. If you notice that it is higher than usual, then don't use the cream.

I personally don't think that it will be an issue. You can also double check with your doctor. I have benefited a lot from glucosamine cream. It helps with my back pain. So I'm happy that it doesn't cause any adverse effects for me.

Is it true that glucosamine cream increases blood sugar? I have diabetes so this is of concern to me.

My mom has an excellent arthritis cream with glucosamine and capsaicin. This cream works like nothing else for arthritis related pain. My mom has pain in her neck on some days due to a neck injury she suffered many years ago. When it occurs, a light massage with this cream is all that's required to relieve the pain.

I've also used it on my knees for knee pain and experienced relief in just fifteen, twenty minutes. I'm not sure which ingredient is most responsible for these results, but I'm sure that glucosamine is playing an important part.
