What is Brazilian Propolis?

Propolis is a sticky mixture collected by honeybees from various plant sources. While a large portion of a beehive is filled in with beeswax, bees use propolis to fill in the small gaps that could cause harm to their environment. Brazilian propolis, also referred to at times as green propolis, is produced in the South American country of Brazil, most commonly from the Baccharis dracunculifolia plant. Brazilian propolis is believed to have antibiotic properties along with other potential health benefits and is often taken as a supplement.

Propolis may be ingested straight, but most manufacturers produce a water-soluble tincture that may be taken directly or mixed with other liquids. The tincture is sometimes put into a pill with a soft gel coating so it may be easier to swallow. Brazilian propolis can even be applied directly to a wound, as it has been known to form a bandage.

Brazilian propolis often includes several minerals, vitamins, and even muscle-building amino acids. Large amounts of B-vitamins in particular are one common ingredient. These vitamins have been known to boost energy and help the body fight off viruses and infections. In countries where professional medical care cannot easily be found, propolis and other natural supplements may be favored above expensive medicine to both prevent and treat sickness.

One cause for recent study is the antibiotic properties of the substance, which may have a positive effect on warding off potential or present illnesses like the cold or flu. Beekeepers have long used a piece of propolis kept under the tongue to soothe a sore throat, and some manufacturers now produce gum and cough drops from propolis. Still others find that the substance helps curb the effects of severe allergies.

Some doctors are now attempting to discern the effects of Brazilian propolis in fighting cancer. Thus far, no solid results have been reached, though there are cancer patients undergoing treatment that have found the propolis to be a complimentary supplement. Brazilian propolis’ antioxidants have the ability to boost the effects of anti-carcinogens. By invigorating the immune system as well, the substance might counter the unpleasant effects of chemotherapy.

Due to its antibacterial properties, Brazilian propolis is often used in dentistry in low-income areas of the world. Many dental diseases such as gingivitis are formed by a bacterial build-up in the teeth and gums, a problem that propolis may treat. The substance sometimes also has an anti-inflammatory effect, which may soothe swollen gums and toothaches. While Brazilian propolis applied directly to the site of infection may treat dental disease, it should be understood that regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups are also recommended.

Brazilian green propolis liquid extract is amazing. I bought it for a sore throat about four months ago. It worked like magic and I've found so many other uses for it meanwhile. I take it when I have fatigue, allergies or when I feel like I'm getting a cold. Within hours, I feel the effects. It prevents me from getting sick and gives me energy. The other day, I applied it on a cut and it was like a liquid band aid. The cut healed so fast!

@literally45-- My coworker says that Brazilian propolis is superior and works better than American propolis. He is from Brazil and has used Brazilian propolis back home as well as American propolis here.

As you know, the quality of bee pollen and propolis depend on where they are produced and which plants and trees the bees use. So it's definitely true that propolis from certain regions are more beneficial than propolis from other regions. I have never tried Brazilian propolis but I've asked my coworker to bring me back some the next time he visits home.

Obviously, you don't need to know someone from Brazil to get a hold of Brazilian propolis. It's sold online and I'm sure that some health stores carry it as well.

What's the difference between Brazilian bee propolis and American bee propolis? Is Brazillian propolis more beneficial? What is the cost like?
