What is Ayurvedic Shampoo?

Ayurvedic shampoo is a natural herbal shampoo that is comprised of Ayurvedic herbs and other organic ingredients. It incorporates different combinations of natural herbs in order to treat individual types of hair and scalp, ultimately enhancing total health. This herbal shampoo can be considered part of the Ayurvedic therapy system, because it incorporates the principles of Ayurvedic herbs and their holistic properties.

The herbs used in Ayurvedic therapy are part of a centuries-old holistic health system known as Ayurveda. Known as the one of the world’s oldest medical systems, Ayurveda is based on human balance with nature and not only treats sickness but focuses on preventing disease and improving health through the use of certain herbs, yoga and massage. Originating in India, the Ayurveda system incorporates aromatherapy, homeopathy and naturopathy.

Ayurvedic products thus incorporate Ayurveda principles to treat and prevent certain diseases and ailments that people often suffer. There are different types of Ayurvedic shampoo available, and each type of this natural shampoo treats different ailments of the scalp and hair. In choosing an Ayurvedic shampoo, one should first decide what hair conditions need to be treated. Ayurvedic shampoo can be used to treat dandruff or dry and damaged hair as well as to promote hair growth. It also can be used to cover gray hair and to treat normal to oily hair.

This type of shampoo incorporates only natural products and is free of all synthetic ingredients, such as parabens and sulfates. These natural shampoos are developed using indigenous herbs and essential oils to cleanse and rejuvenate the hair and scalp. Although there are many variations and combinations of ingredients in Ayurvedic shampoos, certain ingredients are used more often.

The natural ingredients used in Ayurvedic shampoo include shikakai, which is used to cleanse the hair, and reetha, which helps to add lather. Amla has a high level of vitamin C and helps stimulate the scalp. Fenugreek seed powder promotes hair growth, and hibiscus and bhangra promote thick hair growth and are used as coloring agents.

Brahm increases blood circulation, and neem is used as a color enhancer and medicating agent, because it is rich in vitamin E and omega-6. Cinnamon and cloves act as antioxidants, and aloe vera relieves a dry, itchy scalp. Lime juice is often used to clean oily hair, and coconut, almond and mustard oil help nourish and soften hair. As with other types of natural shampoo, Ayurvedic shampoo can be used daily followed by essential oils and/or an Ayurvedic conditioner.

I think that there are two types of Ayurvedic shampoo. There is the typical liquid shampoo that we know, and then there is powder Ayurvedic shampoo which I think is the traditional Indian shampoo. It's mixed with water and other ingredients before applying.

@donasmrs-- It sounds like your husband has a good quality, fresh shampoo.

I'm using an Ayurvedic shampoo as well but I bought it online from a manufacturer. It's imported from India, labeled Ayurvedic and it contains amla among other natural ingredients, but it's not extremely fresh.

That being said, I think it's working. My hair feels softer and it seems to be growing faster. This shampoo smells quite good too. The scent probably depends on the ingredients.

I also use Ayurvedic hair oil. I use the oil as a hair treatment several times a week and I follow up with the Ayurvedic shampoo.

My husband is using an all natural Ayurvedic shampoo for hair loss. He had an Ayurvedic practitioner prepare it for him specially. It's a green shampoo with a very potent scent. It smells like a variety of different herbs.

It's too early to know if it's working for hair loss, but his dandruff has disappeared with this shampoo. I don't enjoy the smell but I'm not complaining for his sake.
