Stovetop kettles are simple cookware used to boil water on the range top of a common household stove. The typical stovetop kettle is composed of sturdy material that serves as an excellent heat conductor and allows the water to reach a boil in a relatively short period of time. Kettles of this type are often used to heat water for tea and similar purposes, and include a spout that is configured to “sing” when the water reaches a desirable rate of boiling.

Historically, the stovetop kettle has been manufactured using either stainless steel or cast iron. Both metals are ideal for heating water in a short period of time, and also are easy to care for. Along with the metal body, the stove top kettle usually features a handle that makes the task of placing and removing the kettle from the stove top simple and relatively safe. Older stove top kettles tend to feature a swinging handle that attaches to each side of the body, and includes a wooden grip. The newer stainless steel type of stovetop kettle normally has a simple handle attached to the top area of the body, near the spout. Handles of this type normally are made of a heat resistant material, keeping the handle relatively cool to the touch even when the water has reached the boiling point.

While newer types of electric kettles are commonly used around the world today, the stovetop kettle does still include a few advantages. First, the traditional stovetop kettle will work with both gas and electric rangetops. This makes the stovetop kettle ideal for use in the home and on camping expeditions, since all the device requires is a level surface positioned over a source of heat.

Second, the absence of electrical workings means no moving parts to replace, which often helps to extend the life of the stovetop kettle significantly. Last, the stovetop kettle can easily be cleaned in the sink or in many instances in an automatic dishwasher, with no worries about damaging any electrical components. When simplicity of use and care is important, the stovetop kettle is an excellent option.
