These writers work in a variety of industries, including computers, electronics, software, health care, engineering, science and communications.

The exact responsibilities of a contract technical writer vary from setting to setting, but in each case the writer is responsible for producing written work. Writing a technical guide for a software product, for example, will entail first becoming familiar with the product.
