There are many activities that are free in Los Angeles, but visitors should be forewarned that while you can find plenty to do for free, many attractions could cost quite a bit in parking fees. If you’re strapped for cash, the best way to save on the parking costs, ranging from 5-15 US dollars (USD) is to take buses to the locations you want to visit. You can buy a day pass for less than 5 USD, which can give you unlimited travel to many things that are free in Los Angeles.

Hollywood and Los Angeles are of course havens for actors, so some things are must sees if you’re a fan of acting. First, you should check television networks for shows that are free in Los Angeles that have live audiences. Many talk shows, and a few sitcoms are taped before live audiences and these may be free to attend. Also, don’t forget to check local listings for the many wonderful free comedy shows in Los Angeles, at either comedy clubs or local bars. You can see some very talented comics this way.

If you are a movie buff, there are a few things free in Los Angeles that you definitely should see. Of course there’s the Hollywood sign, which is visible from many parts of LA. There is a viewing area specifically at a shopping complex located on Hollywood and Highland. You also should definitely visit the Hollywood Walk of Fame, always fun and free. You’ll be able to find the stars and names of just about any well-known star you can imagine. Don’t forget viewing the Chinese Theater where many foot and handprints of past actors are showcased.

Another must for the movie fan is the incredible Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Note that it is closed on Mondays, but open the rest of the week and will thrill you with its displays, interesting trivia and movie history. If you prefer your history a little older, another great place that is free in Los Angeles is the Dominquez Rancho Adobe Museum, in Compton. Do check open times, and availability of free tours.

If you prefer your history to be prehistory, consider free visits to the La Brea tar pits or the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles which offers free admissions on the first Friday of each month. The California Science Center is always free in Los Angeles, though you may have to pay for touring exhibits, and for anything shown in the IMAX Theater.

If you feel a need to get out of the urban environment you might consider a visit to Animal Acres, located about 45 minutes away from L.A. This can be great fun for kids as they get to visit, pet and feed over 150 rescued farm animals. Kids and kids at heart may additionally enjoy the Justice Brothers Racing Museum, always free in Los Angeles.

As you study things free in Los Angeles, don’t neglect the museums that normally charge. Most offer one free day a month that may coincide with your visit. Since Los Angeles boasts so many different museums devoted to numerous different subjects, it can be very worthwhile to take in a few of these on your visit.
