Many common posture problems can be contributed to working conditions, which promote constant sitting and slouching, inadequate exercise and sleeping habits. These do not fully define the causes of all posture problems, but they are the driving force for many back and spine issues. A rounded shoulder or forward neck posture are common types of posture problems, each signifying that the spine is out of balance. Improving posture may be done consciously by remembering to sit up straight, or it can be accomplished gradually through various exercises which incorporate stretching and building flexibility.

Rounded shoulders are usually developed from poor posture habits when sitting in front of a computer or working at a desk. When shoulders have a rounded appearance, and are not down and back as in normal posture, it can create problems by stressing the upper back and internal organs. Conscious habit breaking is the best method to gradually reverse the rounded shoulder posture. It will also help heal any soreness or pain in the body associated with the posture issues.

When the neck or head protrudes forward, as in the forward neck posture, this signifies that posture habits are not necessarily poor, but lacking in strength. The head that continues to push forward may promote problems within the body associated with different organs, such as the intestines, and may also increase the weight and tension of the neck, creating soreness and pain. Other posture problems may develop as a result of the forward neck posture, such as hunching over while sitting and standing. Pressure on the discs of the spinal column usually occur, as well as increased pressure to the abdominal organs.

Exercises to improve these posture problems work on creating strength and flexibility within the spine to support the back in an appropriate erect position. Simple shoulder rolls counterclockwise and vice versa are the common exercises to start loosening up the upper back and creating flexibility in the shoulder muscles. This exercise is an important component in helping to relieve tension in those suffering from the forward neck posture. It also prepares the body for moving the spine and strengthening the back.

Yoga poses like upward facing dog help straighten the spine, especially in those who are suffering from rounded backs due to poor posture habits. This pose involves pushing the palms of the hands into the ground while bending the spine backward as far as is comfortable. Not only does this posture help in relieving back pain and increasing spine flexibility, but it also aids in improving posture by training the spine to fall back into its natural curvature. Posture problems can develop into permanent problems, but may be reversible with conscious direction and stretches.
