Chamomile is a flowering herb in the daisy family. For centuries, it has been used for its health benefits. The herb is still commonly used as an alternative treatment for a number of conditions. These include acting as a calming agent when anxiety or sleeping problems occur, and as an antiseptic for eczema and rashes.

Dried and fresh parts of the chamomile plant are commonly used to make tea. This can be done in a domestic setting or a person can buy commercial tea leaves or bags. The tea that is made from chamomile is believed to have the ability to cure and alleviate a variety of problems.

Chamomile tea is often noted for its anti-spasmodic and anti-inflammatory properties. It is therefore used to alleviate stomach and menstrual cramps. It is also used to alleviate symptoms related to irritable bowel syndrome. Making a mouthwash from the herb is said to be beneficial in treating swelling of the gums in adults, and the irritation experienced by teething babies.

The tea may be used for the relief of pain. This has especially been noted with regards to migraines. When the herbal tea is used for this purpose, it is believed to work best if a person begins consuming it at the onset of the headache.

Chamomile is reputed for its calming effects. People who suffer from conditions such as anxiety or insomnia may find relief from drinking the tea. It may also be given to children who are hyperactive or prone to tantrums.

An essential oil is often produced from chamomile plants. This oil contains a significant amount of bisabolol, which is a component that is noted for its healing properties. Chamomile oil is recognized as having many other beneficial health properties. These include being antibiotic, anti-bacterial, and a digestive aid. It can be used for both internal and external remedies.

The herb's antiseptic properties motivate some to use it for the topical treatment of conditions such as eczema and diaper rash. It can also be used to treat burns and other wounds. For these conditions, it is generally best to apply the essential oil directly to the problem area. If the oil is not available, however, a concoction can be brewed and applied.

Some people have also noted that the herb may prove beneficial as a beauty agent. Chamomile tea bags are believed to be a natural remedy for reducing dark circles around the eyes. Bathing in water which contains the tea bags is believed to improve the skin tone. Application of the essential oil is also noted as a treatment for acne.
