Many successful entrepreneurs are distributors for some of the world's top network marketing companies. The network marketing companies, also known as multi-level marketing (MLM) companies, that offer a product range with wide appeal and marketing strategies that are both varied and accessible tend to be the most successful. Good network marketing companies typically offer products that are either unique, consumable, in high demand, or a combination of all three. Top network marketing companies also offer distributors the opportunity to sell products through one of several proven strategies, including party plan sales, online ordering, and preferred customer programs.

Most successful MLM companies offer quality, consumable products that both retail customers and distributors use and buy often. Consumable product ranges often include vitamins and other nutritional supplements, cosmetics, skin and hair care, household cleaners, condiments, and convenience food items. Companies that specialize in household and health care items rely on customers using up, and then repurchasing, these products on a monthly basis. Several of the top network marketing companies that offer retail customers the option of receiving automatic shipments of the most-used products each month. These preferred customers, receive a discount on the products in exchange for allowing the network marketing company to regularly bill a credit card for the cost of the monthly product order.

Other top network marketing companies specialize in products that are unique and that are best sold via hands-on demonstrations. Trained distributors for these MLM companies demonstrate and sell items such as cookware, candles, cutlery, educational toys, food storage, and couture clothing. These demonstrations can take place at either the customer's or distributor's home. In some cases, the customer is encouraged to invite friends over for a group presentation of the network marketing company's product range. This marketing concept is known as party plan sales, and the host of these sales parties earns a percentage of the party's sales in the form of credit that can be applied to the purchase of additional products.

The top network marketing companies are usually Internet savvy, and in many cases offer e-commerce opportunities to distributors. These companies offer pre-built websites to distributors, and these websites offer customers the ability to order products directly from the network marketing company. The distributor receives a commission on the sale and, in many cases, on any future sales to that customer. In addition, potential distributors often have the option of receiving more information about the network marketing company's business opportunity, and can even sign up as a new distributor online.
