What are the Different Types of Storage for Small Spaces?

Living in a small space such as a small home or apartment means the inhabitant needs to get creative about storage space. Storage for small spaces can be enhanced by the use of tubs, drawers, and closet organizers, and depending on which room needs more storage space, rolling drawers and cabinets can help maximize storage. Shelves are a great choice for both the bedroom and the garage, and rolling shelves add versatility to a space that is used for more than one purpose. Storage for small spaces depends largely on what is being stored, how often it will be accessed, and what built-in features the house has that can accommodate storage in the first place.

Under-bed bins and other plastic bins that can be stowed away are common types of storage for small spaces. Out of season clothing can be packed in such bins and stowed underneath beds, in closets, or behind furniture in the living room. Plastic shelving bins are often stackable, and they can be tucked into a closet. Some versions come with wheels to make access to the bins much easier. When something is needed from the bins, one simply has to pull the unit forward out of the closet to access the drawers.

Behind-the-door organizers are also great ways to maximize storage for small spaces. One of the most common behind-the-door organizers is a shoe organizer, which is a canvas unit with pockets sewn into it in which shoes can be stowed. The entire unit hangs from hooks from the top of the door, and the shoes stow neatly behind the door without affecting the door's ability to open or close. Tie racks, clothing hooks, hat racks, coat racks, and even ironing boards can be similarly stowed behind doors using the proper hook systems.

In the kitchen, a lazy Susan can enhance storage for small spaces. A lazy Susan is a round platform that spins in a circle. Placing spices and cooking oils on the lazy Susan and tucking it in a corner allows the user to spin the rack around to reach spices on any side. A hanging drying rack will free up counter space by keeping drying dishes off the counter and above the sink to drip-dry; the hanging rack is mounted above the sink either between the cabinets or off the front wall, utilizing space that would otherwise be empty and unusable.
