A SIM card, or Subscriber Identity Module, is a chip that stores information in some models of cell phones. A SIM card backup device is a device or application that is intended to extract, copy and store SIM card contents. These devices are especially valuable to those who have accumulated numerous contacts or other pertinent information on their SIM cards. SIM editors, writers and readers and some companies can offer backup services so that a user is protected against loss or damage of their cell phone or SIM card.

A SIM editor is likely to be capable of backing up SIM card contents. Some editors allow users to download SIM contents and transfer them to a different device or application. Users can elect to download their SIM cards' contents and upload them into Outlook®, Eudora®, Lotus Notes® or a PIM application such as Palm® Desktop. Using a SIM card editor as a SIM card backup device in this way will result in the synchronization of devices and a backup of information to a second location.

Users of SIM editors might also be able to download SIM card contents into a data file. This makes for an easier restoration process should anything happen to the original SIM card. A SIM editor also can let users print a SIM card's contents if a user wants to keep a hard copy of the contents on hand.

Though less common, SIM writers also can be used as a SIM card backup device. A SIM writer's primary function is to write new data onto a SIM card, but certain writers might also contain backup capabilities. Should users choose to invest in a SIM writer as a SIM card backup device, they are advised to double-check the writer's features for backup options. SIM readers might also boast the same kinds of backup functions, though they are mostly used to view SIM card contents.

Some companies offer SIM card backup services. Clients can visit the company, hand over their SIM cards and have their SIM cards' contents backed up to a secure website within minutes. Fees might be charged each time the SIM card is backed up. Clients can be supplied with usernames and passwords so that they can log onto a website and view their SIM cards' contents. In addition to having a copy of the contents online, clients might be able to make modifications to them through the website.

Some backup devices are compatible only with certain types of SIM cards. Users should keep this in mind when investing in a SIM card backup device. Before a user makes a purchase, he should identify his type of SIM card. Most users will have Global System for Mobile communications (GSM), Nextel or 3G SIM cards. A user should verify his SIM card's compatibility with the device of his choice before buying it.
