What are the Different Types of Laryngitis Treatment?

There are different types of laryngitis treatment depending on the cause of the problem. Laryngitis is swelling and irritation of the voice box, also known as the larynx. In many cases, inflammation is caused by a virus or overuse of the voice; home remedies can ease the symptoms. In some other instances, a bacterial infection may be the cause, and the best treatment may be antibiotics. If laryngitis is caused by another underlying medical problem, it is often resolved when the primary problem is treated.

Most cases of laryngitis are caused by a virus or by environmental factors such as overusing the voice and exposure to irritants. The inflammation causes a variety of symptoms including hoarseness, sore throat, ticklish feeling in the throat, cough, congestion, and occasional fever. Symptoms usually disappear within a few weeks. Laryngitis treatment in these cases usually focuses on easing symptoms to improve patient comfort through a variety of home remedies.

A key laryngitis treatment is simply to rest the voice as much as possible. This is especially important when the condition is caused by overuse situations like prolonged periods of cheering or singing. It's recommended to speak as little as possible, and to use a soft voice when talking is necessary. Whispering can actually strain the voice more; patients should try not to do it. Throat clearing can intensify the inflammation and should also be avoided.

Dryness can make symptoms like hoarseness worse, so some choices for laryngitis treatment help to maintain hydration. Drinking plenty of fluids is recommended. Lozenges to keep the throat moist are usually helpful and soothing. A humidifier is often beneficial, especially when in the bedroom at night. Many patients also find it helps to inhale steam from a hot bath or shower.

Some over-the-counter medications can be helpful for laryngitis treatment. Anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen can reduce swelling and lower a fever. A dry cough can prevent symptoms from improving, and a cough suppressant could be a good idea in this instance. Often relieving post-nasal drip and stuffiness from a cold with a saline spray or decongestant can reduce irritation of the larynx at the same time.

It's also important to avoid exposure to cigarette smoke during laryngitis treatment and afterward to prevent a recurrence. If laryngitis is caused by a bacterial infection, however, patients need to be treated with antibiotics. They should start to feel better within a few days of starting the regimen. Sometimes laryngitis is caused by other medical conditions such as acid reflux. Treating the underlying problem, i.e. reducing acid and modifying diet, can also relieve the laryngitis symptoms.
