Backyard signs can be a reflection of the property owner's style and personality. Signs can also serve to point out potential hazards on property or they can be more utilitarian in purpose. Utilitarian signs can identify a property's features and walkways, while whimsical signs can display sayings sure to make visitors smile or chuckle. Gardens are another spot where backyard signs are prevalent and help to identify the different plantings. Wood, rocks and metal are some of the materials signs are made from.

Signs can be used in a backyard to point out various potential hazards, such as steps, inclines and slippery walkways. Warning signs can be used in areas with uneven ground or the potential to be muddy and to caution visitors from getting too near the edge of a steep incline or drop-off. Some backyards also have overhead dangers, such as low tree branches and low hanging wires. In certain situations, some types of utilities are located in the backyard and can have signs to help identify them for safety and service, such as a water well, septic tank or sewer. Backyard signs can also caution visitors against smoking, spitting and littering.

Informational signs can be used in a backyard to draw attention to special water features, such as a freshwater spring, fish pond or waterfall. They can also be directional and point the way for visitors to find a pathway leading to a beach, scenic walking trail or swimming pool. Signs in large backyards can also be used to point the way to a nearby street exit or back to the house. Dog-walking areas can also be identified using backyard signs.

Garden signs in a backyard can identify who a garden belongs to as well as what items are planted where. Sayings such as "Mom's Garden" and "Grandpa's Vegetable Garden" make it clear who the family member with the green thumb is. Signs in the garden can be used to identify what type of flowers, herbs or vegetables are planted where, and even the date they were planted.

Inspirational and meaningful backyard signs are often a reflection of the spirit, hobbies and tastes of the homeowner. Poems, quotes and popular sayings are often fodder for signs. Sports team names, logos and mascots are often featured on backyard signs, offering homeowners an opportunity to publicly support a favorite team. Some backyard signs are even used to mark the graves or memory of beloved family pets. The signs can feature traditional gravestone information, a meaningful poem or a religious verse.
