Stomach pain and nausea can be troubling symptoms, and finding the cause is not always an easy endeavor. In many cases, these symptoms do not indicate a serious illness, although it is always wise to consult a doctor to obtain an accurate diagnosis. Some possible causes of stomach pain and nausea include a stomach virus, lactose intolerance, or appendix or gallbladder disorders. Diverticulitis may also be to blame. Treatment options vary according to the direct cause of the stomach pain and nausea and may include dietary changes or the use of over-the-counter or prescription medications.

One of the most common causes of nausea, along with stomach pain, is infection with a stomach virus, also known as gastroenteritis. Symptoms of gastroenteritis include stomach pain or cramping, nausea, and diarrhea. Fever may or may not be present with this condition. Medical treatment is not usually necessary for gastroenteritis, as it usually goes away on its own within a few days, although it is important to drink plenty of fluids in order to prevent dehydration. In some cases, prescription medications may be given to help ease some of the symptoms.

Lactose intolerance is a leading cause of stomach pain with nausea. Lactose is a naturally occurring sugar found in dairy products and breast milk. In addition to these symptoms, gas and diarrhea may occur shortly after consuming a milk-based product. The best treatment for this condition is to avoid dairy products altogether, although medications are available to help the body digest lactose a little better for those who do not wish to completely give up their favorite foods.

Appendix and gallbladder problems frequently manifest with symptoms such as stomach pain and nausea. If the appendix is the problem, the pain is typically in the lower right abdominal region. Pain in the upper right portion of the abdomen may signal a problem with the gallbladder. The body can continue to function efficiently without these organs, so treatment for these organs often involves surgical removal.

Diverticulitis is another common cause of stomach pain and nausea. Diverticulitis is a medical condition in which a portion of the intestine, called the diverticulum, becomes swollen and irritated. The pain from this condition can be in any part of the abdomen and may include fever, chills, and weight loss. Treatment options for diverticulitis may include dietary changes, the use of prescription medications such as antibiotics, or, in rare cases, surgery.

@SarahGen-- Have you been tested for food intolerance?

I don't want to scare you but these were the exact symptoms my son had when he was diagnosed with celiac disease. Celiac disease is gluten intolerance. You may have this or some other type of food intolerance. You should get tested right away. You can also avoid gluten on your own and see if your symptoms decrease.

I have constant stomach pain and nausea everyday and I don't know what's wrong with me. It all started suddenly last week. I've seen a doctor but they haven't found anything wrong. I'm nauseated all the time and I'm losing weight. When I eat, my stomach hurts and I have to rush to the bathroom.

I think that treatment is necessary for gastroenteritis if the stomach pain and nausea are accompanied by vomiting and diarrhea. And these symptoms are almost always present in gastroenteritis.

I've had gastroenteritis only once but it was quite bad. I had it as a result of food poisoning. First I just had some nausea and stomach pain but after a few hours, I also started experiencing diarrhea and vomiting.

I had to go to the hospital because I couldn't drink water and I was becoming dehydrated. They gave me an IV serum at the hospital along with antibiotics. Only then did my symptoms go away. Gastroenteritis should be taken seriously in my opinion.
