Bike trekking, also known as bike touring, requires a rider to be in good physical condition and prepared for living days at a time with only what they are carrying on their bikes. The most important tip for bike trekking or touring is to become familiar with the touring route and know where and when stopping for supplies will be possible. It is important to remember too that the equipment one carries on a bike trekking trip will have a significant impact on how smoothly the trip goes. One should be sure to research gear carefully before leaving, and the person on the trek should know how to do basic repairs to the bike should something go wrong on the trail.

Bike trekking is typically done off-road, while touring can be done on-road or off-road. Since the rider will spend the majority of his time off road and away from cities and towns, he must be prepared to cook for himself, perform first aid on himself if necessary, navigate through trails that may or may not be adequately marked, and find clean drinking water when necessary. This means preparation is key: the rider should familiarize himself with the route he is taking on the trip and mark where he might be able to procure important supplies. Getting basic training in first aid techniques is also very important, and the rider should carry a well stocked first aid kit with him at all times.

It may be a wise decision to take a bicycle maintenance class before leaving for a bike trekking trip. Over the course of several days or weeks of riding, something is bound to break, wear out, or otherwise go out of adjustment, and knowledgeable bike mechanics may not be available for several miles. The rider should know how to change a tube, adjust and replace brake pads, adjust derailleurs, replace shift and brake cables, and perform other basic bicycle repairs and adjustments. Most local bike shops offer some sort of training classes, or they are usually willing to do basic instructions to prepare the rider for his or her trip for a small charge or no charge at all.

Since bike trekking is done over the course of several days or weeks, the rider is likely to encounter different kinds of weather. He or she should be prepared for changes in the weather by packing appropriate types of clothing. Rain gear is almost always necessary, and lightweight, breathable clothing can help the rider maintain body temperatures and comfort throughout the trip. Research different types of lightweight clothing options that will help accommodate for the weather.
