There are many good ideas a person can use when choosing a low-fat breakfast. Among the best tips, however, are those that recommend selecting a low-fat breakfast cereal and moistening it with skim milk. A person might also benefit from tips that recommend incorporating fruits and whole grains, low-fat pancakes, muffins, and pastries. Additionally, tips that recommend making low-fat, lean-protein choices can prove helpful as well.

One of the best tips for choosing low-fat breakfast meals is to consider cereal. Many cereals are low-fat and contain a variety of nutrients important for optimal health. An important consideration for this type of cereal is that a person can usually eat a full serving without consuming a lot of calories, a fact that can prove important if an individual is striving for weight loss in addition to lower fat intake. Additionally, opting to use skim milk on the cereal can help keep the fat and calorie count low.

Oatmeal cooked in water, with no added milk or butter, has 3.5 grams of total fat, making it a low-fat breakfast.

Another good tip for low-fat breakfast choices is to incorporate fruit. This is an easy way to get important nutrients without the fat that goes along with so many breakfast choices. It also provides a way to enjoy sweetness with one's breakfast without adding refined sugar. For example, a person can choose to add bananas or strawberries to his breakfast cereal or yogurt and avoid the temptation of fat-filled sweet foods, such as donuts, some muffins, and some breakfast pastries.

When you do consume fat at breakfast, opt for heart-friendly olive oil rather than butter or margarine.

An individual may also benefit from tips that recommend choosing grain-rich foods when trying to select a low-fat breakfast. Some options include whole-grain pancakes, oatmeal and other hot cereals, and whole-grain muffins. These meals combine low-fat content with important fiber and nutrients to make a healthy breakfast.

Protein is an important part of a healthy breakfast as well, but getting it without too much fat can present a challenge. To deal with this, a person can apply tips that recommend choosing low-fat, non-fat, and lean proteins for breakfast. For example, a person may do well to make non- and low-fat dairy choices and choose to use egg whites instead of yolks. Some people also use egg substitutes to keep their fat intake low. As far as bacon, sausage, and ham is concerned, a person can choose lean and light versions to keep fat low, and consume breakfast meats only in moderation — some people also consume soy products at breakfast to keep fat content low.

@Scrbblchick -- I was thinking the same thing. In the effort to eat less fat, we don't need to add twice as much sugar. An egg white omelet with low fat cheese is always a good option for something a little more substantial.

I also like low-fat Greek yogurt, which also has the advantage of not being very carb heavy, either. Even if I add some berries, they're still not as sugary as some fruit. With a little ingenuity, you can do a low fat breakfast that is healthy on all other fronts, as well. You just have to use your imagination and decide that's what you're going to do.

Turkey bacon and turkey sausage are good for keeping a lower fat breakfast intact, but you have to be careful. In the quest for a low fat breakfast, you can easily eat a lot of sugar and carbohydrates.

Hot cereal is all right -- until you eat the instant kind that has every kind of sugar in it. Bananas are delicious, but they are very high in sugar.

You have to look for moderation. I like a breakfast sandwich with lean turkey, scrambled egg white, a tomato slice and a small piece of cheese. That's low fat, low sugar, and only moderately carby. With whole grain bread, the carb count also goes down.
