There are several natural anti-inflammatory agents available for treating the symptoms of inflammation. Some remedies are intended to be taken in supplement form, while others are most effective when added to the affected person's diet. Certain types of essential and pure oils are also considered to be quite effective for treating inflammation condition when the oil is administered to the skin where the swelling has occurred. Inflammation in the body is the result of various types of tissue swelling due to a host of reactions such as injury, infection, or disease. Some common types of inflammation include arthritis affecting the joints and tendons, injury during regular activity or sporting events, and infection due to bacteria or virus as in the case of a sinus infection.

One of the most common natural anti-inflammatory remedies is turmeric. It contains the chemical curcumin, a known agent for reducing inflammation in the various tissues of the body. Turmeric is used as a spice in many dishes, and is commonly used in Indian cuisines. It is also available in pill form, and these supplements are taken 1 to 3 times a day with the daily dose reaching 400 to 600 milligrams.

White willow bark extract is another anti-inflammatory option and was originally used by Native Americans as a tea, to treat inflammation and minor pain such as headaches. It is most frequently taken in supplement form of 20 to 40mg ingested 1 to 3 times a day as tolerated. This extract is believed to be effective because it contains salicin, a member of the phenolic glycosides family.

Many natural anti-inflammatory agents are found in food that make up a healthy diet. Certain types of oils, such as the omega 3 oils often found in specific types of fish, are very popular inclusions in a natural healthy diet. Most dietary experts also recommend eating fresh foods as often as possible to reduce ingesting potentially harmful preservatives, and to reduce intake of saturated fats. It is also suggested that green, leafy vegetables are ideal for controlling the symptoms of anti-inflammatory diseases such as arthritis. In addition to a healthy diet, the patient may also wish to drink an adequate amount of water to ensure the body is well hydrated.

Certain types of herbal oils are also used for their natural anti-inflammatory properties and may be directly applied to the skin for relief as needed. Olive oil can be used as part of a healthy anti-inflammatory diet as well as used as a topical treatment. Jojoba oil, especially in its organic form, is also often used to treat inflammation when applied to the distressed areas. Pure, essential oil of lemongrass is another well known oil for reducing the painful symptoms of inflammation. If any type of skin irritation manifests with the use of any oils or supplements, natural health experts suggest stopping use and trying a different form of natural anti-inflammatory treatment.
