What are LED Screens?

Light-emitting diode (LED) screens are liquid crystal display screens that use LED back lighting instead of using the normal cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) backlighting. LED screens have numerous advantages over screens with the classic type of backlighting and are considered to be superior products. They are much less prone to breaking, last longer, provide a much more vivid white light and turn on quickly.

The light-emitting diode itself is what provides the high quality. LED modules are resistant to almost every type of breakage point. The light emitting diode itself has hundreds of thousands of hours of shelf life. During those hours of operation, there is no or very little degradation of quality. LED screens run strong and true until they finally go out.

The biggest and most sought-after benefit of LED screens is the fact that they are much, much whiter. When one is looking at a white screen on your computer each pixel is displaying a white color. The backlighting determines how vivid that color is. These types of screens are fast to turn on and are almost immediately as bright as they can get. This quick warm-up feature is thanks to the nature of the diode itself.

One thing that people get confused about is the fact that when a monitor or television is referred to as an LED screen, that is not the type of display it is. All LED screens are also LCD screens. The information is displayed by the LCD screen, but the backlighting is of the LED variety. Other types of display technology, such as digital light processing (DLP) or plasma screens, will never have LED back lighting.

There are two different types of LED screens and one is superior to the other. The first and most common type is the edge-lit type. In edge-lit LED screens there are LEDs on only one side of the screen. The LEDs are pushed through a diffuser, creating a semi-uniform backlight. In array-type screens, the LEDs are placed throughout the entire screen.

The array type of screen is superior because it offers a brighter and more uniform back light. It also draws more power. Edge-lit screens are cheaper but will not have quite as sharp of a display.
