What are Core Exercises?

Doing core exercises is important for more than just fitness and getting those coveted six pack abs. The body's core, the area that encompasses the trunk, abs and pelvis, is vital for stabilization and balance. This is where your center of gravity is so it is vital that that area of your body is strong. Core exercises work the muscles in your abdomen, hips, lower back and pelvis so that they work together to support your spine and keep your body stable.

A good core body workout can help alleviate lower back pain and help protect you from injury. It can improve your balance while it has the added bonus of resulting in toned, tight abs. It generally starts with a good mid-section workout and incorporates lower back exercises into the mix. Core exercises are most effective when all the muscle groups are working together. It is important to start slowly and work up to a more intense workout. Watch your form and technique to avoid injury and to achieve the greatest results.

The great thing about core exercises is that you really don't need any equipment. If you have a large exercise ball, that is great, but it isn't necessary. Starting with basic crunches is a good way to get the ball rolling. This standard abdominal workout is very effective for strengthening muscles and providing a basis for a strong core. Other good core exercises include the bridge, the plank and the quadruped. Adding some varied stomach exercises to the mix at different intervals will help keep your workout fresh. Simple movements that incorporate a medicine ball is also a fun way to get a good workout.

Some tips to keep in mind:
  • Choose exercises that work all of your core muscles at the same time.
  • Value quality of the movement, form and technique over quantity.
  • Keep your breathing slow and steady.
  • When you need a break, take one.
  • Seek the assistance of a professional such as a personal trainer.

In order to get the most from your core exercises, you should do them at least three times a week. You should also keep in mind that muscles that work your core should be one prong of your fitness regimen. You also need to include cardio and work your upper and lower body as well for a total body fitness routine. Working your whole body is the only way to achieve all over balance.

Core exercises are more important part of the fitness workout. Core exercises help to lose the weight, build the muscles and also to reduce the risk of the injuries. So these core exercises must be added in the daily workout plan to get their benefits for the health and fitness.

A lot of people think that abdominal exercises are just situps, and they start having bad flashbacks to gym class. But there are so many more options! Try a yoga or Pilates class, or get a core exercise DVD, to learn some new moves. You can find exercises geared for men, women, athletes, expectant moms like the previous poster, etc.

Core training exercises can make such a difference! When I was pregnant, I gained forty-five pounds and kept expecting low back pain. But I was religious about doing my core exercises. (I had a couple of good prenatal exercise DVDs, one yoga and one regular.) The back pain never showed up. Now that the baby is here, picking him up would be just destroying my back except for my core exercises.
