How Many Actresses Vied for the Role of Scarlett O'Hara?

After a nationwide casting call, 1,400 actresses were interviewed for the role of Scarlett O'Hara for the 1939 film Gone with the Wind. Of those, 400 were asked to do readings such as Lana Turner, Joan Bennett, and Susan Hayward. The role eventually went to the English actress, Vivien Leigh.
