How Effective Is Ciprofloxacin for Cystitis?

Erik J.J. Goserud

The general effectiveness of ciprofloxacin for cystitis is dependent upon the cause of the condition. As Cipro is only used for certain strains of bacteria, one of these strains must be the cause of infection if ciprofloxacin for cystitis is going to be a successful treatment. The best way to identify the culprit of cystitis is through an appointment with a medical professional, who will likely run a number of tests, including a bacterial culture.

Cystitis refers to the inflammation of the bladder. The suffix itis always translates into inflammation, or swelling, in medical terminology. When this swelling is due to bacterial infection, it is usually referred to as a UTI, or urinary tract infection. The symptoms of a urinary tract infection or other subclass of cystitis include pelvic pressure, difficulty urinating, urinating at night, and frequent urination.

A person who is exhibiting symptoms of a urinary tract infection, or a different form of cystitis, should seek medical attention.

Not all forms of cystitis are bacterial in nature; one such example would be traumatic cystitis — bladder inflammation caused by an external force. If bacteria is the cause, however, an antibiotic such as ciprofloxacin for cystitis may be prescribed. Ciprofloxacin is commonly used by doctors and other medical professionals because of its widespread effects. Not all bacteria are susceptible to the actions of Cipro; however, a great number of strains are indeed affected.

Ciprofloxacin belongs to a class of antibiotics known as fluoroquinolones and is marketed under brand names including Cipro, Ciflox, and Ciloxan. The mechanism through which fluoroquinolones fight bacteria is complex at the chemical level but can be described as replication interference. The specific action is misunderstood and debated, but it is known that ciprofloxacin somehow inhibits the reproduction of bacteria.

Some uses of this broad-spectrum antibiotic include prostatitis, respiratory tract infections, and sinus infections in addition to the use of ciprofloxacin for cystitis. Other potential ailments in which Cipro may be utilized are skin, bone, and joint infections. Cipro has also been reportedly used in the treatment of typhoid fever.

A person who is exhibiting symptoms of a urinary tract infection or a different form of cystitis should immediately seek medical attention. The medical professional will be able to identify the source of the condition and treat it accordingly. If ciprofloxacin for cystitis is prescribed, the possible adverse effects and reactions should be taken into account before agreeing to follow prescribed orders. These effects may range from mild to severe and vary among individuals. If the benefits outweigh the risks, it may be wise to choose an antibiotic regimen to treat cystitis.

@SarahGen-- I think it's possible that your cytitis is caused by a type of bacteria that doesn't respond to ciprofloxacin. Or maybe it's not caused by bacteria because usually this is an effective treatment.

@burcinc-- Ciprofloxacin might be a good drug for some kinds of cystitis, but I think it's a terrible drug for chronic cystitis.

I have chronic cystitis and I was put on this drug twice by my doctor. I took it for about five weeks each time and not only did it do nothing for my cystitis, but it caused additional problems for me.

I started developing fatigue, muscle aches and pains after my second round of ciprofloxacin. I've done some reading about the potential side effects of this drug and apparently, long-term use can cause muscle and nerve damage! I can't believe that doctors still prescribe it for chronic cystitis, or any other chronic inflammatory condition really. I refuse to take it ever since I found out.

I had been experiencing pain and a burning sensation while urinating for several days. My doctor had a urine test done for me and said that I have an infection and cystitis. He prescribed ciprofloxacin-- 500mg in the morning and 500mg at night for five days.

It worked great! My symptoms started disappearing after the second day and I feel absolutely fine now.
