There are several ways to prevent heartburn in early pregnancy, including sleeping with your head slightly elevated, and cutting back on spicy, fried, and fatty foods. Do not eat your dinner prior to bedtime, and wait a few hours before lying down after eating a meal. You should avoid caffeine as much as possible, as this can also lead to stomach distress.

If you are suffering from heartburn in early pregnancy, you may want to avoid eating chocolate as chocolate can cause heartburn for many individuals, and the symptoms may be heightened during pregnancy. This would include chocolate candy, syrups, and anything chocolate flavored. Peppermint may also cause heartburn, so you might want to avoid that as well.

During early pregnancy, it is common to have food cravings. If you know certain foods cause you stomach distress, do your best to avoid them altogether. Eat several small meals throughout the day, rather than two or three large ones. It will be easier for you to digest a small meal. By eating smaller portions, you will be less likely to experience stomach acid that can occur from over-eating.

Foods with high acidic levels, such as citrus fruits should also be avoided. Vinegar may cause heartburn, and should also be avoided. Try to raise the head of your bed about 6 inches (15 cm) if you experience heartburn in early pregnancy during the night. This can be done with the use of a board or blocks placed under the front of the bed. Alternately, you may use an extra pillow to keep your head elevated.
