How do I Install a Motion Detector?

A motion detector is a security device that is designed to monitor a perimeter with special sensor devices. Installing a motion detector typically includes installing two parts. These are the motion detector and the receiver. A motion detector sensor is typically placed within a few hundred yards (approximately 91.44 meters) from the receiver device. To correctly install a motion detector, the installer must properly configure both the receiver and detector device.

The first step to install a motion detector is selecting a good location for the sensor device. The motion detector typically includes screws and mounts, which enable the device to be connected to walls, trees stumps, or floors. This device should be placed in an inconspicuous area to evade potential criminals.

An individual should spend some time planning the area he wants monitored. He should install a motion detector into a position that will best detect the area to be secured. Each type of area has specific design features that determine how the detector should be mounted.

Many receivers include special transmission codes that must be configured to match the code of the sensor. This special key is a radio transmission key that ensures the receiver and sensor match. Most receivers have a special compartment that enables the configuration of this code. This should be completed before mounting the detector device.

A motion detector will detect any movement around a defined perimeter. This requires the device to be placed in an area that is free from tree limbs or small animals. Wind and animals can cause false alarms if they interact with the sensors of the detector. This will become a nuisance to the homeowner if configured improperly.

A motion detector can be used for monitoring incoming traffic on a roadway or driveway. This type of configuration requires the homeowner to install a motion detector near the entrance of the roadway. It can either be mounted on a pole or on a nearby stump. When installing a roadway detector it should be mounted about two feet (approximately 60.96 cm) above ground level. This will reduce the effects of small animals walking through the sensors.

Most motion detectors are powered by batteries or solar panels. A battery-powered detector requires periodic review and replacement of batteries, whereas a solar-powered detector requires sunlight placement to function properly. An individual should decide which type of detector he wants to manage. These considerations should be reviewed before he begins to install a motion detector.
