How Do I Design a Pet Room?

A pet room should be designed to suit the type of pet you own. Whether your pet is a dog, cat, bird, or reptile, try to create an environment that is most natural for its species. For instance, a pet room for a parrot should include plenty of natural wood branches, play stands, and climbing toys. Pet rooms for cats and dogs should include beds and hideaways. Consider shelving units or a storage area to place pet toys, treats, and other supplies.

When you design a pet room, create a comfortable and stimulating environment for your pet. The room should be a safe haven for your pet to retreat to. If you own a puppy, it's a good idea to design your pet room with hardwood floors or vinyl flooring. Carpets and rugs may become soiled as your puppy is in the housebreaking stage. If your pet room is carpeted, use some throw rugs or runners for protection.

If you want a custom-designed pet room, consider hiring a professional. If there are no major renovations to be done, you can easily create your pet's room yourself. First and foremost, consider the safety of your pet. When creating a room for your pet to call home, remove anything that could be considered a safety hazard. There should be no accessible wires, cords, or small items lying around that could harm your pet.

Consider installing a carpeted window perch for your feline friend. For indoor cats, this is a necessity, as it satisfies their natural curiosity of the outside world. A soft spot on the ledge of a bay window works equally well. For your canine companion, place a comfortable bed made of memory foam on a non-carpeted floor. Memory foam will contour to your dog's body, while providing support for the lower back and joints.

Designing a pet room for your avian friend can be a little more complicated. If your parrot's wings are not clipped, the room needs to be perfectly safe to explore while your animal is out of the cage. While it's not advisable to allow your bird out of its cage without supervision, you'll need to provide a safe environment where you can interact with your pet.

Tabletop or free-standing play gyms will provide mental stimulation for your feathered friend. Choose play stands and gyms with natural wood perches of various widths. Birds love to chew, but manzanita wood is generally indestructible to most curious beaks. Be sure to provide your bird with plenty of toys to play with and chew, as parrots can become easily bored without stimulation.

Whether your pet room is designed for dogs, cats, or birds, maintain a comfortable room temperature at all times. During summer, provide plenty of ventilation, and place cages or beds away from sunny areas of the room. Never place your pet's bed or cage near drafty windows or air conditioning vents.
