How Do I Choose the Best Hanging Wardrobe?

A hanging wardrobe is a type of enclosure meant for storing clothing to protect them when not in use. These wardrobes are often made of plastic or canvas, though other synthetic materials can be used as well. When choosing the best hanging wardrobe, you will first need to determine what your specific needs are as well as how much space you have available for storing the wardrobe. Since the wardrobe hangs, it is usually placed in a closet, though other options are available. Be sure to determine both how you will use the wardrobe and where you will place it before purchasing.

Once you have determined what size hanging wardrobe you need, think about the materials used to construct the unit. Canvas is durable and will resist damage, but it can be heavy and more expensive than other synthetic materials. Lighter weight materials will probably save some money, though they will not be as resistant to damage. Whichever material you choose, make sure it is water-resistant or waterproof, and that it seals up tightly to prevent bug infestations and mold growth. The seams should be strong and double-stitched if possible, and a zipper front will help you access clothing quickly and easily while providing an efficient seal when access is not needed.

The frame materials of a hanging wardrobe may include metal, plastic, or wood. Metal is the most common material, as it is generally inexpensive, strong, and thin enough to fold down should the unit not be needed anymore. Plastic can be used as well, and it is usually less expensive than wood or metal, but it can be flimsier and more prone to breakage. Wood tends to be the most expensive material as well as the thickest, and while it is strong, it can be susceptible to mold and mildew build-up.

Some hanging wardrobe models have extra features such as fabric shelving or windows that make viewing the garments inside the wardrobe easier. If you will be storing many garments, or garments that you intend to access regularly, consider a hanging wardrobe with windows so you can see which wardrobe contains the garment you are looking for without having to open it up. Shelving units are great for smaller items such as shoes, or items that are not normally hung from hangers, like sweaters, some types of pants, hats and gloves, and so on.
