How do I Choose the Best Golf Swing Trainers?

Dan Cavallari

Golf swing trainers can help you correct your swing and improve your game overall, though choosing the one that is best for you can be daunting since so many different trainers are available. Before going out to purchase any golf swing trainers, first determine what your specific golf swing problems are; some trainers can help correct problems with power, others can help with poor follow-through, and some can even help correct motions that cause pain during your swing. Make a list of your swing issues and research trainers designed to help correct your specific problems.

The cost of golf swing trainers can vary significantly, so if possible, spend a fair amount of time testing out the trainer or researching the pros and cons of a particular trainer. It may help to visit the local golf course or driving range to talk to a golf pro who can recommend a good trainer for your golf swing issues. For hook and slice issues, a pro may recommend golf swing trainers that are essentially hinged golf clubs. You will know immediately if you made a bad swing because the hinge will break rather than keep the shaft straight throughout the swing. For problems with proper form, some specifically designed straps that wrap around the legs or around the arms can help you develop a better, smoother swing. These tend to be less expensive than other trainers because they are small and inexpensive to make.

Any golfer knows that using an iron or a wood is a vastly different process than using a putter, so some golf swing trainers are specifically designed to help you develop better putting skills. If this is the weak part of your game, consider purchasing one of the many golf swing trainers designed for putting, and if possible, buy a trainer that includes an instructional DVD that will give you tips and tricks for better putts. Such trainers often focus on shoulder position to make sure your arms and shoulders move in a pendulum-like motion throughout the putting process.

A speed meter can monitor the speed at which your golf club moves throughout your swing. This information can be used to help you tailor your training practices for speed consistency and power. This small device will mount to your club and will give a digital reading as to how fast the club head moved, thereby allowing you to understand how much power is necessary for the drives you want to achieve.

I saw a new device at the 2011 PGA Show in Orlando called the PRO-HEAD Trainer. Rankmark, a Leading golf product testing company, said in its February issue that it is a "Trainer that works." The PRO-HEAD offers two benefits: learn to keep your head behind the ball through impact; maintain your spine angle.

Several leading instructors, including Martin Hall, have endorsed the product. May be worth trying for less than $200.
