How Do I Choose the Best Electronics Workbench?

If you often work with and build electronics, then using an electronics workbench may be more efficient, more convenient and safer than using a regular workbench. An electronics workbench should have power receptacles built into the frame, so you can plug electronics directly into the bench. Depending on how large the electronics are, you may need a large or small workbench, though bigger is often better. Some electronics are very heavy, especially if the parts will be used for industrial purposes; getting an electronics workbench that is strong and made of the best materials will likely be useful. Working with electronics can be dangerous, so there also should be safety precautions built into the bench.

Power receptacles are the devices into which you plug a power cord, and these should come standard with any electronics workbench. If the workbench does not include receptacles, then you may have to stretch power cords across the room or to inconvenient locations, which makes it harder to test electronics, and can be dangerous. The best workbench will have several receptacles, so several electronic devices can be used at once. There are different receptacle types, and you should get a workbench with the receptacle you will be using most often.

The size of the electronics workbench also will be important, especially if you work with larger devices. Having an electronic device drape over the side of a workbench is inconvenient and can be hazardous. It is usually better to get a workbench that is slightly larger than your basic needs, just in case you ever need more room.

If the electronics workbench has weak legs, then the bench may buckle under the weight of a heavy device, potentially breaking the device and injuring you. To prevent this from happening, you likely will want to get a workbench that can support a large amount of weight. The material of the workbench also is important; most workbenches are made of steel because it is dense. If you are getting a table made from a different material, then you should ensure that it is durable, tough and does not burn easily, just in case a spark flies while testing a device.

Working with electronics will usually be safe, but there are times when everything can go haywire. To minimize the potential damage, you may want to get an electronics workbench that comes with many safety features. For example, the bench should have a circuit breaker and should meet or exceed electronic safety standards. Failing to get a bench designed for safety can result in injury or death if a problems arises.
