How can I Stretch Wire?

When landscaping, many people decide to build a fence to frame up the yard. When first looking at the project, it appears to be relatively simple. Many people think you just have to dig holes in the yard, assemble the poles and framework and secure the wire. Unfortunately, it is not as easy as that. Putting up a fence also involves having to stretch wire, which can get tricky, but not impossible.

In order to stretch wire, you will first need to purchase stretcher bars and stretcher bar pullers. These are used to stretch wire to the proper tension, to prevent the fence from sagging. You can purchase these items at any do-it-yourself store.

Install the fence posts according to the instructions that come with the wire fence kit. After you have completed this, you will need stretcher bars to stretch wire across the length of the fence. Insert the stretcher bars under the fence so that they are no more than 10 feet (304.8 cm) apart. There should be one at each end of the fence.

Position the stretcher bars so that they are centered in between the vertical stay wires. They must run parallel to one another. Position the horizontal line wires between the wedge retainers. Fasten the wedges in to the wedge retainers. These can be found on the top of the vertical line wires. Lock the fence wire onto the stretcher bars by applying firm pressure to the wedge.

Attach the stretcher bar pullers that are used to stretch wire on fencing. Position two stretcher bar pullers on each stretcher bar. Secure the snap clips that are located on the end of each chain to the pull lugs, found on the stretcher bars. Attach the snap clip of the stretcher bar puller to what is called the "pull lug" on the stretcher bar. Pull the loose end of the chain towards the stretcher bar puller and fasten it on to the jaws.

Rotate the handle on the stretcher bar puller in a clockwise direction. This will stretch wire on the fence, causing it to tighten. As you do this, the fence will slowly rise to an upright position. Until you are ready to splice the wire, secure the fence to the posts in a temporary position.

When you stretch wire for a fence, it is best to find a partner to help you. Each of you can attach a stretcher bar puller to the stretcher bar, cutting the time in half. Take turns holding one end of the fence while the other rotates the handle on the stretcher bar puller. It will also be easier to fasten the stretched wire to the posts if there are two of you to hold up the fence. As always, the job is also more enjoyable when you have an efficient partner to assist you.
