How Can I Get Rid of Oily Dandruff?

Dandruff is an uncomfortable and often unsightly reality for many individuals suffering from scalp and hair conditions. Whether one is afflicted with dry dandruff or oily dandruff, preventive steps like good health, sunlight exposure, and proper hair washing and hair care can diminish symptoms. Substances found in medicated shampoos may further address some of the causes of dandruff. Certain natural dandruff remedies like specific oils may also prove beneficial.

Two distinct types of dandruff exist: dry dandruff and oily dandruff. The former occurs when dried up flakes of skin fall from the scalp. In oily dandruff, however, these flakes mix with excessive oil produced by the scalp. This creates a thick covering on the scalp that may only be detectable after combing. Some treatments are more effective for a particular type, whereas other measures combat and prevent dandruff in general.

Dandruff treatment often relies on discontinuation of certain artificial products. Hair maintenance products like hair spray and gel can often have an adverse effect on the scalp and thus create conditions for development of dandruff. One may eliminate a certain product or switch to a more gentle product and catalog any changes in dandruff presentation.

Genetics, hormones, or fungi growth may produce an oily scalp. Individuals with a propensity for oily hair and scalp will most benefit from thorough and consistent hair-washing. Many specialty shampoos are offered for sale, including brands directed at oily hair, dry hair, and even shampoos targeted for general dandruff control. Experimentation with these products may help alleviate dandruff recurrence. In addition, proper conditioning could combat environmental conditions that create accumulations of moisture and dirt.

Several natural and artificial supplements have been advocated for treating oily dandruff as well. These products are usually applied directly to the scalp, as scalp massage also promotes blood circulation. Ironically, many types of oils may provide a solution for oily dandruff. Lemongrass oil, coconut oil, and tea tree oil are a few of the natural remedies associated with successful dandruff treatment, as is apple cider vinegar. The oils, in addition to dried Margosa leaves, can also reduce itching.

More medical solutions may exist with substances that are fixtures in many anti-dandruff shampoos. Zinc may extinguish oil-producing substances on the hair, as can salicylic acid. Further, a particular skin cell condition that can impact the scalp called seborrheic dermatitis may be treated with medications or shampoos containing coal tar.

Keeping the body itself in a healthy state will impact several areas, including the scalp. A nutritional diet and exercise will aid in blocking the situations conducive to dandruff. High stress levels and low sunlight exposure are further suspected contributors to dandruff. As such, preventing dandruff often relies on addressing these underlying issues.

@ddljohn-- I used to have severe dandruff a few years ago. I recommend washing your scalp frequently, preferably once a day. I wash my hair every day with a gentle shampoo. I avoid shampoos with lots of chemicals and I try to eat healthy.

@ddljohn-- I don't think that there is an easy, fast or permanent way to get rid of dandruff. There are different causes for dandruff though, so using the right treatment will make things easier.

I think you should see a dermatologist just so that the cause can be identified. For example, if your oily scalp and dandruff is due to a fungal scalp infection, you will need an anti-fungal medication for it. If it's related to hormones, medications or the immune system, then other treatments can be sought.

Sometimes dandruff shampoo helps, but sometimes it makes things worse, so see a doctor for the best oily scalp and dandruff treatment.

I developed an oily scalp and dandruff a few months ago. I did not see a doctor for it, I just bought dandruff shampoo and have been using it since. My dandruff lessens when I use the shampoo but comes right back when I don't use it. I'm scared that one day, it's going to stop working all together.

Is there a way to permanently get rid of dandruff?
