Do Some Flowers Have Meaning?

When sending flowers or planning for a special occasion that will involve flowers, you can add to the symbolism and the enjoyment by choosing flowers according to their special meanings. There are many flowers in a variety of colors, shapes, and textures with unique meanings that can be found during any season.

When it comes to a wedding, some great flowers to include in the bouquet include the lily, the carnation, the ivy, the red rose, and the lime. The lily represents purity, the carnation represents love that is pure and deep, ivy symbolizes fidelity, the red rose means “I love you,” and the lime symbolizes conjugal bliss. The bachelors’ button, which symbolizes hope, and the honeysuckle, which represents generous and devoted affection, are also good choices for a wedding bouquet.

Of course, there are many occasions to use flowers besides a wedding. When sending a bouquet of flowers to a person to congratulate her on a new job or promotion, buttercup can be a good choice, as it represents riches. After meeting someone new and wishing to let him know how special the meeting was, sweet pea flowers can be a great choice, as they represent meeting. Alternatively, if you wish to remind that person of the time you spent together and how special it was, forget-me-not flowers, which mean "do not forget," are a great choice.

If telling a person that you care for her, marigold flowers can be a great selection, as they represent sacred affection. When letting someone know that you feel the same way toward him as he does towards you, jonquil flowers symbolize affection that is returned. To let someone know you think she is beautiful or to thank her for her kindness, a bouquet of camellia flowers, which represent perfect loveliness and gratitude, is a great choice. On the other hand, perhaps jasmine, which symbolizes grace and elegance, is a better choice.

Pink roses may symbolize friendship.

Of course, the colors of certain flowers are also meaningful. Various colors of the rose, in particular, have special meanings behind them. A rose that is red represents true love, while a coral rose symbolizes desire. Orange means excitement, fascination, and enthusiasm, and a pink rose means grace, gentleness, and elegance. To represent modesty and friendship, a light peach rose should be selected. A white rose symbolizes innocence, purity, youth, and spiritual love.

@lighth0se33 - Thanks! I now know what to get my little sister for her birthday. She has developed a complex lately about her strange-colored eyes, so I think that variegated tulips will be perfect for her. I'll be sure to let her know nonchalantly and ahead of time about the meanings of tulip colors so that the gift will serve its purpose.

@StarJo - I looked into the meanings of tulips also, and though some of the colors mean the same thing as the colors of the roses, such as white being purity and orange being desire, I found that variegated tulips tell the recipient he or she has lovely eyes, purple tulips represent royalty, and cream-colored ones are symbolic of eternal love. I just thought you'd like to know, since they are your favorite flower.

Tulips are symbolic of perfect love. Like the red rose, a red tulip represents true love. My husband knows that tulips are my favorite flower, and he got me a bouquet of red ones for our first anniversary.

@Mor - If you want to make sure someone knows what you intend to say with the flowers you pick, try telling them.

Even if you don't want to say it outright, you can include a card or a note or even email them a website describing what each flower means.

This makes the gift even more personal and shows that you are willing to put in the work.

If you want to really do something special, plan out a bouquet with meanings that reflect a story, or maybe your history together.

Then make sure all the flowers are accounted for in your accompanying explanation and be prepared for a very happy night afterwards.

You have to be careful if you want to give flowers with some meaning or if you are giving flowers to someone who knows what they mean.

There are some flowers that are supposed to symbolize rejection, or a plea for friendship for example. Not the sort of thing you want to give your lady love. Yellow flowers of all kinds are often associated with negative meanings.

Often flowers shops online will have an article or a database showing what different flowers mean.

If that's the case you'd better also show your loved one the same database as many flowers have more than one meaning!

Daffodils are flowers of hope, daisies are flowers of innocence, and Easter Lily symbolizes beauty and life.
