Studies show that flavanols in cocoa reduce blood pressure and increase cognitive function. Cocoa also contains antioxidants that help the body fight damage from free radicals. Cocoa should be consumed in extreme moderation to get the most benefits. Most modern sources of cocoa, however, have most of the flavanols processed out. Dark bittersweet chocolate is the best choice at this time.
More about cocoa:
- Cocoa contains mood lifting agents and promotes endorphin and serotonin production in the brain.
- Cocoa should not be consumed with milk as milk interferes with the absorption of the antioxidants found in cocoa.
- White chocolate is not chocolate at all as it does not contain any cocoa.
