What Are the Health Benefits of Almond Milk?

Almond milk, a beverage made from ground almonds and water, is a drink that people might choose to consume either in addition to or in lieu of dairy milk. Some of the commonly reported benefits of fortified almond milk include its positive impact on heart health, bone health, and skin health. It is a lactose-free milk alternative for people who cannot tolerate lactose in their diets as well as a non-dairy milk substitute for people who avoid dairy products for health reasons or personal choice, such as those who choose to be vegan. Since it contains fewer calories than most other types of milk, many people also consume almond milk as part of their weight loss plans.

One of the benefits of almond milk is that it can promote a healthy heart. Unlike dairy milk, for instance, almond milk does not contain cholesterol. While almonds naturally contain protein, which also benefits the heart, the other benefits of almond milk are mainly a result of its being fortified with additional nutrients. Almond milk also contains potassium, which may help lower cholesterol levels and alleviate high blood pressure.

Increased bone health is another of the reputed benefits of almond milk. An average serving contains 30 percent of the U.S. Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) of calcium as well as 25 percent of the RDA for vitamin D. Consuming almond milk can be beneficial for anyone concerned about maintaining strong bones, especially women and older adults.

The stated benefits of almond milk also include its support of good skin health. Almond milk produced in the U.S. contains up to 50 percent of the RDA of Vitamin E, which can protect skin from sun damage and help it retain moisture. It also contains Vitamin A, which is associated with both skin and eye health. Furthermore, vitamins A and E are believed to be antioxidants that protect cells and tissues from damage, thus boosting the immune system. Almond milk also contains some iron, which is necessary for carrying oxygen to skin cells.

In addition to its health advantages, there are some other benefits of almond milk that make it a convenient choice as a milk substitute. Almond milk generally has a longer shelf life than other milks, and it can often be used as a substitute ingredient in recipes that traditionally call for dairy milk. Despite its benefits, however, it should be noted that some people with nut allergies cannot tolerate almond milk, and should therefore seek out alternatives.

Is it possible to make milk products out of almond milk? I am just thinking about how delicious it would be to have a yogurt made from almond milk or even some ice cream.

Wow, I have never seen or heard of almond milk before. Do they sell it in many grocery stores or is it something I would have to go to a health or natural foods store to buy?

Also, what do they usually charge for a container of almond milk? I know that a lot of popular milk substitutes can cost three or even four times as much as their counterparts that come from cows.

I love almond milk and I drink a lot more of it than I do traditional milk. I think it is great on cereal. It has all the advantages of milk but it also helps to enhance the flavor of the cereal. You get the flavor of the almonds of course but there is also a mild and pleasant sweetness that comes through. When you eat it on sugared cereal like Cheerios or Corn Flakes it is awesome.
