Was There Ever a Coin worth 7.5 Cents?

Coca-Cola was invented in 1866 by pharmacist Dr. John S. Pemberton. Originally, the drink was sold at soda fountains but in 1894 it began being bottled. From the late 1800's to 1930, a bottle of Coke only cost a nickel and the US Treasury may be partly responsible for the lack of a price increase for consumers.

The US Treasury rejected a request by Coca-Cola to create a 7.5-cent coin so a single coin could still purchase the soft drink from a machine when the company raised prices. Regardless of this rejection, Coca-Cola still rose to fame and has since been one of the leading soft drink industries in the world.

More about Coca-Cola:

  • During its first year of sales Coca-Cola only sold an average of 9 servings a day in Atlanta, its home market.
  • Today, Coca-Cola averages 1.9 billion servings per day around the world.
  • Coca-Cola's ad campaign containing animated polar bears was originally launched in 1993 and is still one of their most beloved ad campaigns to date.
