How do I Choose the Best Lotion Mask?

A lotion mask is useful for maintaining a perfect and radiant complexion. Facial masks help clean your skin, tighten pores, exfoliate or remove dead skin cells, and brighten the overall skin tone. Various types of masks for different skin care requirements are available in the market, or can be prepared from natural ingredients at home. It is important to know your skin type to find a facial mask that is best suited to your purpose.

People with normal skin generally have wider skin care product options than people with dry, oily or mature skin types; in the latter cases, you will do well to go with specifically formulated types of lotion moisturizing mask. For a dry skin mask, look for a lotion with natural oils like avocado, almond, grapeseed, primrose and jojoba, or a lotion that contains the seaweed extract Phytessence Wakame. The last is particularly recommended as it is a rich source of antioxidants, minerals and vitamins, just what your skin needs to stay supple and clear. A cocoa butter lotion mask is also good for application on dry skin, as is an aloe vera gel hydration mask.

Oily skin will require a lotion mask that can balance out the natural skin oils, removing the excess and maintaining the skin softness, without causing any undue dryness. A clay mask is best for regular use if you have oily skin. The clay will deep cleanse the pores, clear up blackheads and whiteheads, and prevent acne formation. An exfoliating mask containing a fruit extract, or a vitamin C mask, is excellent for freshening and smoothing normal skin. To reduce sagging and wrinkle formation in mature skin, you might consider a collagen mask or a facial mask containing Cynergy TK.

Organic herbal mask products or a homemade face mask like a honey mask, a cucumber mask, a green tea mask or a cream mask are usually safe for every day use. They can be applied with cotton pads, cotton wool, or massaged on with the fingertips; left on for 10 to 20 minutes, and then wiped or washed away. If you are trying on a new lotion mask and especially if you have very sensitive skin, do a skin patch test to make sure it does not have any adverse effect on your skin.

Ideally, consult your dermatologist or an experienced beautician before using an inorganic cleansing mask, and always check the list of ingredients. Lotions containing mineral oils and other petroleum derivatives may do more harm than good as these items tend to exacerbate the skin oils and clog the skin pores, leading to problems like acne. Skin care specialists advice against using a lotion mask containing fragrance-inducing chemicals like parabens, linalool and coumarin; if used in concentrated forms, these ingredients may pose a potential cancer-risk.

@turquoise-- You are right. Everyone should use a lotion mask that suits their skin type. People with oily skin cannot use any random product as it can clog pores. Clay masks are great. You can also use all gel type masks because these are mostly water and tend to be oil-free. Stay away from lotion masks with oils.

@donasmrs-- I think the article is referring to a mask that is in liquid cream consistency and is applied to the face like a cream. This is in contrast to paper sheet masks for example, which are paper sheets covered in lotion.

The only lotion mask I use is my clay mask. I have oily, acne prone skin, so I can't really use any lotion mask with oil. Clay masks are awesome because clay absorbs all of the excess oil and dirt from the skin. Using this mask twice a week seems to keep pimples away. I apply the clay all over my face, let it dry and then wash it off. I like to apply a thick layer because I think that works better. Thankfully, clay masks aren't very expensive so I can use them regularly.

I don't think that lotion masks clean the skin as much as they hydrate and moisturize the skin. These masks use lotion, which is usually a hydrating product that also contains natural oils. I personally don't use a lotion mask to clean my face. I use it after cleaning my face to moisturize and hydrate my skin.

I love treating my face to a lotion mask on the weekend. It's also relaxing. It feels like I'm undoing the damage incurred on my skin from the stress of that week.
